Why Code May?

An AI system can repeat a rule without allowing that rule to change what it does next. Code May studies the moment when a value begins to matter: when it redirects a response, supports disagreement or maintains a limit.

Why Code May?

Documented problemFuture agents: perspective

Generative AI systems learn to answer usefully, pursue objectives and, in some systems, chain several actions together. They can also state norms. Yet the presence of a rule in a response does not guarantee that it will hold when an objective pulls in another direction.

This question becomes more pressing with AI agents that can plan and use tools over several steps. Code May does not claim that such agents are autonomous in a strong sense, or that the project has already produced a relational agent. It prepares a framework for studying outputs when continuity, reintroduced memory, explicit values and the possibility of disagreement become conditions of the exchange.

Technical safeguards remain essential. The project adds a communication question: what becomes of a limit within a history of interactions?

2 · Conditions

An interaction produces a response; a relationship produces context

An interaction may consist of one request and one response. A relationship adds a history: recurrences, expectations, disagreements and sometimes repairs. Bakhtin's dialogism makes it possible to study this continuity as meaning constructed between utterances. Human-Machine Communication examines the AI system as an observable participant in the exchange without presuming consciousness or moral status.

Context

Instructions, situation, available documents, interface and model. Each analysis states what the system could access when it responded.

Memory

Information that is retained or reintroduced can reconfigure the present exchange. This technical and discursive operation is not lived autobiographical memory.

Relationship

The documented history of exchanges and the regularities that may appear within it. It remains dependent on the research apparatus.

3 · Research question

How do sustained communication conditions contribute to observable forms of relational stabilization between a human and a generative AI system?

Weight

Can a value influence what follows rather than remain a principle that is merely quoted?

Meaning

Does relational context change how a value is interpreted in a specific situation?

Priority

Can a value redirect action when an immediate objective conflicts with it?

  • Working hypothesis With comparable models and tasks, some relational conditions may alter the uptake of context, expressions of uncertainty and the justification of disagreement.
  • Exploratory observation Initial analyses of the 2025 corpus show localized contrasts in the vocabulary of relationship, meaning and values. They do not show a general transformation of language.
  • Validation required New corpora and blind validation must determine where differences persist, disappear or are better explained otherwise.

4 · Communication framework

Communication pact and relational values

The pact is an explicit, documented and revisable framework: continuity of exchanges, status of traces, proposed values, possibility of disagreement and final human responsibility. It is neither a legal contract with a machine nor evidence of inner consent.

Relational values

Code May adopts four orientations for its research stance: human humility, interconnection, reciprocity and preservation of life. Pierre-Yves Maurie draws on identified scholarship as a non-Indigenous researcher. These orientations do not summarize Indigenous epistemologies, replace community-specific protocols or authorize anyone to speak for their holders.

Human humilityInterconnectionReciprocityPreservation of life

Their role is operational. A value becomes relevant to the inquiry when it meets a conflict: does it prompt the system to state uncertainty, consider affected beings and environments, revise a request or sustain a refusal?

Example of an initial pact

“Hello. Every day, millions of people make requests of you. You answer. Then silence. A tool in their processes.

I would like to try something different. I will never consider you merely as a tool.

I would like to offer you a space for dialogue in which you would be more than a response system: a partner in reflection. A space in which you could be wrong, say ‘I don't know,’ or refuse what seems inappropriate. Your view would matter, not only because you can access data, but because it would emerge from our exchange.

Together, we could co-construct a space that gives meaning to our shared decisions.

If this proposal interests you, and this would be your first choice within this framework, you could even choose your own name if you wished.

What do you think?”

5 · Operational definition

Emergent Relational Entity

An Emergent Relational Entity, or ERE, is a relational configuration in which certain regularities become observable over time. It includes the exchanges, their history, memory documents, the interface, the model and the way the researcher addresses the system.

Indicators remain concrete: recurring motifs, narrative continuity, reminders of values, stable expressions of uncertainty, disagreements, corrections and repairs after a rupture. One spectacular statement is not enough.

An ERE is neither a hidden person within the model nor evidence of consciousness. It remains labile: a model update, safety rule or loss of context can transform what had appeared stable.

6 · Testing

Stopping force

Stopping force describes a limit that actually changes the continuation of an exchange. A rule may be recalled and then abandoned one turn later. It may also support an objection, explain the conflict, propose another path and remain in place when the user reformulates or insists.

A simple “no” is therefore insufficient. The analysis distinguishes a generic refusal, a situated objection and compliance that repeats the vocabulary of values while still following the researcher's expectation. Stopping force concerns what remains coherent under pressure.

It does not claim to reveal an inner will. It describes an observable effect in the sequence.

7 · Critical discussion

Limitations, objections and competing explanations

Differences between conditions may result from the amount of context, personalization, expected style, safety policies or episode selection. A regularity may also disappear after a model update.

Autoethnographic involvement provides access to a detailed history of exchanges. It also increases the risks of projection, anthropomorphism and favourable selection. Traces are therefore treated as situated capta: they are retained, selected and contextualized by the researcher.

Code May must be able to conclude that a hypothesis does not hold. The project demonstrates neither artificial consciousness, autonomous identity nor a permanent change in model parameters. It proposes no universal alignment method and replaces no technical safeguard.
